What Is a Certified Lay Minister?

Certified Lay Ministers are trained laity who serve the Church through preaching, teaching, worship leadership, care ministries, and church administration. This role combines spiritual depth, doctrinal grounding, and servant-hearted leadership.

They are not ordained clergy, but they are vital to the mission of the Church, especially in areas where pastoral support is limited.

  • Serve as leaders in worship and teaching
  • Receive training in Wesleyan theology and classical creeds
  • Strengthen churches by supporting pastors and congregations
  • Offer pastoral care and represent the Church with grace and truth

“You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.”
— 1 Peter 2:9 (NIV)

Why Lay Leadership Matters

The ministry of the laity is essential for the flourishing of the Church. In the Global Methodist Church, we recognize that all baptized believers are called to active ministry.

Certified Lay Ministers extend the reach of pastoral care and teaching by answering God’s call to lead with humility, wisdom, and faithfulness.

Certified Lay Ministry strengthens congregations by encouraging discipleship, outreach, and spiritual growth from within the community itself.

Steps to Certification

To become a Certified Lay Minister in the North Carolina Conference of the Global Methodist Church, individuals must:
